History Notes: "Japanese Internment" with Dr. Selfa A. Chew
Thursday, November 18, 2021
Discover history and culture through a monthly informal discussion series on the second Thursday of each month at 1pm. From October through November, the theme is “Asian History of the Southwest.” On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt set in motion a massive displacement of the Japanese American communities residing in the West Coast and other areas of the United States. Executive Order 9066 followed a Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It ordered the interment of persons of Japanese descent in concentration camps. Soon, they were joined by Latin American men, women and children of Japanese descent. Uprooted from their homes in Latin American countries they were transported from their countries of residency or citizenship to the United States southern border camps. This presentation will discuss the continental dimensions of the Japanese American internment program during WWII.
